My Favorite Places After Ten Years
Hi! You’re here! Thanks for coming. The subscribe thingy is at the bottom if you like what you read. So let’s get started.
Living in the Charleston, South Carolina area for ten years, here are a few of my favorite places. After collecting the photos and my thoughts, I found that they are all places of quiet, streets to wander, or garden areas to be in peace. Of course, this is my writing place and my thoughts. Email me if you have additional locations, and we’ll chat.
John Rutledge House Inn

My first trip to Charleston included a stay here. I was teaching evening classes and needed a quiet place to stay within walking distance of my classroom. Even after all these years, it is still my favorite hotel in the city. Nothing like the service, the location on Broad Street, and the rooms. (Stop now and read the Google reviews if you don’t believe me.) If you want to “know” Charleston, stay here.
The Dewberry Hotel

Grab a friend. Go here for a drink in the spring or fall. Sit outside up or down. Enjoy.
Historic Downtown Charleston

Bring comfortable walking shoes. Close your map. Turn off your phone (except for your camera) and start walking. Downtown Charleston is one of the best places for a springtime walk. The flowers are in bloom, the boxes dressed in their Sunday best, and the history is endless. Your 10,000 steps will go by in a flash.

Unitarian Church In Charleston - The Cemetery

I was a member here. The people are lovely, the congregation is warm, and if you stay a while in Charleston, they will provide interesting conversations. My favorite place in Charleston is this cemetery. (I don’t believe the ghost stories, but you can.) This is where I would go for solitude and meditation. It is quiet and purposefully unkempt. It lives and breathes life, both present and past. Kudos to the UU gardeners.
Middleton Place

Middleton Place is a historic rice plantation that dates back to the 1730s. The gardens wind down to the Ashley River. It is a half-hour northwest of Charleston. If you like a quiet place to wander and a history lesson, it is worth the time and drive.
Other Places:
There are a multitude of restaurants, boutiques, and places to stay. You can find all those easily with a quick internet search. I have many favorites, but you should make your own. Just remember, this is the South. Slow down and live like a Southerner.
