Edinburgh Scotland Neighborhoods
The neighborhoods are better than the city center
One of the things I do when visiting a place I’ve never been is look at the real estate for sale. As a retired real property attorney from the U.S. who has a passion for real estate, it’s just something that I do. If I’m really into the city, I will check out neighborhoods and look into what is available in the areas I find.
Dean Village
That is how I learned about Dean Village. It’s a tourist destination, a popular place, I learned on Instagram. The photos below will show you why. For me, it was simply adjacent to a neighborhood with apartments that looked like somewhere I would live. Given several places to check out, we started from Marchmont and headed to the Village.

Water of Leith Walkway
We discovered the walkway once we crossed the bridge in Dean Village, trying to find a shortcut to an apartment I wanted to see. There were few tourists on the path, and we found a calm, relaxed place to enjoy in the city's heart.

I could live here. (No, we didn’t look inside nor at the price.)

We strolled the city over the next few days and found a bookstore, other pubs, and city art that we liked. The bookstore appealed to me for its proclamation and selection of books that most stores don’t bother carrying.

I needed food at that moment, and this pub had good food. I learned that most pubs in Scotland do not serve food—they are only bars. This is different from London, where we’d just been.

Ah, another book. Well, I’m a writer. What do you expect?

Will I return? I already have plans. The landlord will challenge me to RUN up to Arthur’s Seat this time, I’m pretty sure.
